The way I’m working to not feel like I’m churning out content just for the sake of it is by dropping my articles as a “magazine” once a month instead of 1-2 a week. It lets me sit with the ideas, deeply research, and do the kind of editing work I want to do by spreading it over the whole month. I’ve been enjoying it so far! Works really well for my personal creative process.
Thank you so much for this- I haven't posted my life on social since I started having babies 5 years ago... I had this visceral ick about it. But weirdly I now have a creative pull to come back in a small capacity to scratch that creative itch that seems to have been offline since motherhood. I've have been trying to process what that looks like while still being fully present with my kids, and not getting sucked into the algorithm. This gave me lots to consider. So appreciate you!
So hear you on all of this including the instinctive ick with sharing your kids. You can share your ideas, worldview, thoughts or even just your writing (no solid message) etc but keep the private life tucked away.
It is like you are inside my mind. Why as humans do we need permission to be more like ourselves and what WE want? I have been pondering on all of this in the last few days only, after months of trying to get my business off the ground to support my family (still doing what I love) and wanting to burn it all down at the moment. My creative flow is not happy when "I have to" post. I am tired of all the strategies online and being subject to people's advice on a daily basis. I am going to ponder more after reading your article and get back to what I truly want to share, rethink my time online and accept that as human beings(and women) we can't always be on.
There is absolutely a sweet spot- and that doesn’t mean there is no ‘hustle’ if you’re trying to get things off the ground. But you’re right— you’ve gotta sit with it all beyond the noise and you’ll know the way. ❤️❤️
Peta! I literally just got home from a walk with a friend where I chatted things through and decided to pause, maybe even end, my paid tier here on Substack. My reasons are similar to yours but also a bit different too. I feel nervous, relieved, excited about it. Thanks for writing this all out, it helps me a lot to hear the cogs whirring in other creative brains!
Every single word. Finally had time to listen to this while I was doing laundry. I started posting online 5 years ago when I had 2 under 2 and now I have 5 children. I’m still running and scaling a NWM business and I feel like IVE changed so much. I did so much motherhood content in the beginning and now you couldn’t pay me to post my kids online. Maybe that’s a sign my prefrontal cortex has developed 😆 anyway thanks for the reminders. I’m so hard on myself and about how much I need to be posting online but the reality is… im not going to be posting as much as Shelby Sapp 😂😂 you said post and ghost recently and that was best advice Ive ever heard!!! I was someone who started posting someone on Substack this year after finding someone I really love on this app and there is so much bad advice about monetizing it and using it. I’m just going to start using it as my diary I think and sharing my honest thoughts and my world view after living in Peru and now Japan. Thanks heaps for the encouragement xoxoxo
Yes and to be honest I think people love diary style entry more. Mine used to be called ‘pk diaries’ and I literally just say down and wrote about my week and it was effortless.
That's a great idea, and im gonna change my website to push PPV instead of subscriptions. I want conscious viewers and supporters, not somebody who has all the money in the world to forget about what they signed up for.
Integrity! This is what I strive towards! Thank you for these words of wisdom! Im right there with you about turning on the pay by article option. Also, as a 5/2 Sacral Generator a lot if not most of the advice out there just doesn't resonate with me and align with my design, and instead of listening to my inner wisdom (I tend to forget- helloooo amnesia, know her far too well too), I "force" myself to do things everybody else does (very smart lol)and then in moments of clarity Im like 'huh?! That really isnt me'... I know I said a lot and not very structured either, all I want to say is thank you, I hear you and see you and agree with you. ❤️
How is it that yesterday i sat down with a friend and said these words " i just don't know what to do anymore, i feel i want to connect with people in real life not online anymore" and then i read these words which are like honey to the soul. Thank you for being a voice that says what needs to be said and leads the way. You are a gift Pk x
This was so goddamn good. You are so generous with your words and spirit.
Agree 1000% about the pressure of paid tiers where regular delivery of “new product” is what’s valued and compared in the market. Like the fast fashion of embodied transmission and transformation. Hmmmm.
As a 36yo creator publishing on and off since 2009, there have been times when “consistency” served me, and times where it really hasn’t. Times like now.
After 4 years not writing online, this year I started a weekly Substack in April to “get back in the game” and the conclusion of the experiment is… the pressure made me write something to “get it out the door”, not because it’s what feels the most true to say.
It’s also been interesting to track this trend as a reader … I don’t have time or bandwidth to read everyone’s output, even when I love them. If someone disappears for 6 months I don’t even notice, I just get excited when I see their name again and think…oh this is gonna be GOOD.
Following our inner authority probably works best for creatives and readers. And the Substack biz model isn’t the one in the current form.
Thank you Imogen and yes i get all of this so much-- sometimes we nee to thrust ourselves back into a rhythm... but sustainable 24/7 365 days a year is just not human for most of us. It's why we have seasons. It's amazing how these platforms and their models shape us, and have us questioning our own nature + creativity rather than questioning them. XX
I LOVE YOUR WORK AND THIS PIECE ESPECIALLY WAS WHAT I NEEDED TO HEAR. You are right, instead of tantruming and deleting social media completely, be an adult with full creative agency. Love this, thank you again
I was just thinking today that I would much rather pay per post and be able to read and support more authors/creators that way. I love the reminder that we don't have to go the way of everyone else and feel like it's the only way. I don't live like that in most areas of my life, thankfully. BUT for some reason with my creativity I felt bound to the "rule" of the content treadmill and since I know myself and know I can't and don't want to be on the treadmill I have instead chosen not to even bother sharing my creative work. I've been pushing against that false narrative lately and this is another reminder that I'm on the right track. It can look like whatever it needs to look like and that's ok. Thank you for the encouragement!
Exactly Hannah— you’ve get to be as creative as you like with the structure of your creative life and the ‘rules’. I hear what you say about deciding to just opt out all together (I’ve had seasons like that too)…. The platforms definitely reward consistency because they want max activity on their platforms… but there are alternatives for sure eg some people use Ghost instead of Substack.
Thank you! We are such diverse humans that it is absolutely absurd to believe we can create/deliver/work in the same rhythm pattern. And that goes for a lot of different things and not only the online world to me.
A very practical question: if I have chosen the annual subscription how does your pausing - looks like for me ?
I am very happy to support your writing and creative expression and always enjoy reading you… I don’t mind your changing rhythms. Just wondering how if you pause on a stretch of some months that works with annual subscriptions?
Hi Leo!! Great question— it pauses in that no time is lost for you. Eg if we paused with 8 months to go, you keep 8 months in the bank. As well as access to the archive in the meantime.
Some yearly people prefer to get a refund for that time because they simply don’t wanna wait, maybe they want to invest in other writers who are in a ‘peak’ season you know? If that’s the case, they email us and we refund for time remaining no questions asked :) xxx

That’s awesome Jessica!!
This is genius. I can’t churn out weekly posts, I always go too deep and have too much to say. I love the idea of thinking of it as a magazine.
I absolutely love this idea!

Oh girl I so get it. Will you write about it? I love reading about this from others perspectives too. ❤️
Definitely. I will let you know when I do!
Yes pls!! Xx

First we tantrum, then we adult 🤣 thanks Elizabeth xxx
An in person vision? I sent you a message about this 🤍
I love and respect this so very much ♥️ Such an incredible reminder to stay true to yourself and respect your own boundaries ♥️
